«’Όποιον και αν ψηφίσετε,

θα είμαστε ακυβέρνητοι».

Είδαμε τους μετανάστες να αμπαρώνονται

σε στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης,

είδαμε την κανονικότητα να εκδικείται

και να επιβάλλεται σαν νόμος και σαν απειλή,

είδαμε τον συντηρητισμό να γίνεται φύλακας και

προστάτης της χειρότερης πλευράς του ανθρώπου,

είδαμε την απληστία και την εκμετάλλευση να

καταστρέφουν τα πιο όμορφα όνειρα μας μαζί

με τα δάση,τις παραλίες, τα πάρκα, τις πλατείες,

τα νοσοκομεία.Είδαμε τον συντηρητισμό

και την απάθεια να κρατάει την ζωή μας

φυλακισμένη σε πόλεις- φρούρια του εμπορίου

και της μαζικής αποβλάκωσης…

Ίσως τώρα πλέον είμαστε πιο κοντά στο

σημείο χωρίς επιστροφή…

Για να αγγίξουμε αυτό το σημείο ίσως

όλοι μας έπρεπε να είχαμε παραιτηθεί

από τις δουλείες μας τον περσινό Δεκέμβρη…

...Ίσως οι άνεργοι έπρεπε να αντικαταστήσουν

την ανασφάλεια της «ατομικής αποτυχίας»

με την εξεγερμένη υπερηφάνεια ενός σπουδαίου

συλλογικού ρίσκου…

ίσως οι μαθητές και οι φοιτητές έπρεπε

να φύγουν από τα σχολεία τουλάχιστον

για ένα χρόνο επαναδιατυπώνοντας το νόημα

της μαζικής εκπαίδευσης…

Η δημιουργία χιλιάδων νέων ιστοσελίδων,

δωρεάν ταινιών, βιβλίων, δίσκων

και φυλλαδίων να ανταγωνιζόταν

τότε την κυριαρχία των Μ.Μ.Ε.,

τα δωρεάν underground φεστιβάλ να διέλυαν

την «βιομηχανία μαζικής διασκέδασης»

και τα κατειλημμένα πανεπιστήμια

να προσέφεραν δωρεάν στέγη,

τροφή, αντι-πληροφόρηση και γόνιμη

ψυχαγωγία σε χιλιάδες ανθρώπους

κάθε απόγευμα.

Ίσως πρέπει να ζήσουμε συλλογικά ορίζοντας

ξανά το νόημα της σύγχρονης

πολιτικής φιλοσοφίας

και της επαναστατημένης Τέχνης…

Ίσως οι δημιουργικές ομάδες φίλων,

τα κατειλημμένα πάρκα, οι καταλήψεις και τα

κοινωνικά κέντρα να μπορούν να γίνουν σημεία

πραγμάτωσης όλων αυτών που στερηθήκαμε

κλεισμένοι στην ιδιοτέλεια και στις μικρές,

ασήμαντες, ατομικές μας αυταπάτες…

Ίσως να πρέπει να παλέψουμε ενάντια

σε πολλούς φόβους μας, αυτό-εγκλωβισμούς,

βαθιά ριζωμένα ψέματα, κόμπλεξ

και ανασφάλειες…

Έτσι ίσως καταφέρουμε να ενώσουμε

την καθημερινή ζωή με τις πιο μαγικές κρυφές

επιθυμίες μας μεταμορφώνοντας τους δρόμους

της Μητρόπολης σε πολύτιμες στιγμές

Ελευθερίας και ευτυχίας

που να στέλνουν την λάμψη τους

έως τις άκρες αυτού του πλανήτη…

Η Εξέγερση δεν τέλειωσε…

Η Εξέγερση δεν θα τελειώσει ποτέ…

«Whoever you vote,

we will be ungovernable».

We have seen immigrants closed

in concentration camps, we saw normality

taking revenge expressed in laws

and as a threat, we saw conservatism

be the guardian and the protector

of the worst side of human being,

we saw the greed and exploitation

destroying our most beautiful dreams

together with the forests, beaches,

parks, squares and hospitals.

We saw conservatism and apathy keeping

our lives imprisoned in fortress-like

cities of commerce and mass stupidity...

Maybe now we are closer

to the point of no return…

To reach this point perhaps

we all should have resigned from our jobs

last year in December...

...Perhaps the unemployed had to replace the

uncertainty of "personal failure" with a great

proud insurrected collective risk...

Maybe the students of schools and

universities had to leave school

at least for a year of holidays,

rediscovering the meaning

of public education...

Then, the creation of thousands

of new websites, blogs,

free distributed movies, books, dvds

and pamphlets could compete the

dominance of the Mass Media…

Free underground festivals can destroy

the "mass entertainment industry"

and occupied universities can offer

free accommodation, food,

counter- information and meaningful

entertainment for thousands of

people every evening.

We have to live again collectively

defining the meaning of

contemporary political philosophy

and revolutionary art ...

Perhaps the creative teams of friends,

the affinity groups, the occupied parks,

the squats and the social centers

can become points for making

alive all those dreams we lost

in the selfishness and in our small,

insignificant, individual illusions ...

We may have to fight against many fears,

self-traps, deeply rooted lies,

psychological complexes

and insecurities ...

And then we will link our daily lives

with the most magical secret desires

transforming the streets of Metropolis

in precious moments

of Freedom and happiness

and send their flashlight

up on the sky to the edges of this planet ...

The insurrection never ends ...

The insurrection will never end ...

Trance Dance / Ritual and Belief

Theoretical research and practical fieldwork in various traditional societies around the globe have demonstrated that dance, as a purposeful and intentionally rhythmical patterned activity that derives from music, is often related to trance, that is states of mind in which ordinary conscious awareness is usually partly and temporarily suspended.
More important is the fact that in such animistic societies as those of Western Africa trance states are institutionalized and form a part of the religious life of the people so concerned. There, it appears that trance – induced naturally or chemically with certain drugs – is related to possession by spirits and deities, and thus is an instrument of ritualistic and religious importance because it provides the basis of experiencing the ‘sacred’ or the ‘supernatural’.
In other words, through listening to music and dancing a qualitative change occurs in the minds of individuals that facilitates what they perceive as a religious or transcendental experience. In a different cultural context, that is in a modern Western one, usually (but not always) young people, members of what sociologists label countercultural groups, have for the last fifteen years used to gather in large numbers – ideally outdoors – and dance passionately for many hours under the sounds of extremely loud repetitive electronic music, often under the influence of drugs. Such musical activities are known as ‘raves’.
At first glance, what people do in raves seems to be quite unrelated to what people do in trance states in traditional societies mainly because the formers’ goal is entertainment whereas the latters’ aim is religious in character, and is guided by a structure of custom.
On a closer look, however, scientific evidence suggests that certain special qualities of both the sound and the drugs can produce perceptual changes, and thus may facilitate an encounter with the transcendental.

Unfortunately ... we have to deal

with many problems in this world until we could

consider the political and social system

successful or feel that we

live in "ideal conditions of

peaceful coexistence" ...
The parties, the concerts, the gatherings,

the festivals, the squares, the demonstrations,

the social centres are not in an «other world».

All of them breathe the same toxic air that permeates

all our relations exactly here we are all living ...

There is a lot of violence, many psychologically

complexes, much racism, many hidden tensions,

much hatred, too much stupid addictive drug use,

much cocaine, heroin and several pills, many

mucho-arrogant guys that when they gather

are ready to put themselves in serious troubles,

in fights, in stupid and irrational acts.

There are many lies, many rumors, much

of awful behavior, many ego styles, the general

hypnosis, the alienation, the egomania ...

There are also many who are waiting to reaffirm

their resignation, their apathy and indifference,…

they lurk to see the collective efforts of all of us

to fail and we get lost also like others in the

obligatory deception and general apathy

... All of these appear in the parties, in the parks,

and highways as they appear in our hearts, and

in our days and nights...they appear from everywhere,

from the television, from the yards of schools

and universities, from our workplaces, from the

central squares and the suburbs, from the rich areas

and the slums of this world ...
To attack against the mass stupidity requires

cultural action from many different initiatives,

requires many different ways, requiring intensive

cultural work of many, many people.
We will not sacrifice any aspect of Freedom for

the sake of «order» and «good manners»,

we will not become a civil militia, we would not f

orce anyone to accept our views ...

but we, with all our friends, we will try to resist

the stupidity, the egomaniac violence,

the petit- bourgeois slavishness, the elitist

snobbishness and the inhuman brutalization

that is produced and imposed by the cultural,

economic and political structure in which

we are obliged to live ...

We will try to find all possible ways to change

these conditions through our actions, and the

Public Autonomous Ephemeral Atmospheres...

In a world driven to destruction by its leaders

and their mentors, the only way to escape

from self-destruction is to fight for the

destruction of the system ...

and that is what we try with dozens

of small and larger situations ....

To destroy ignorance, exploitation,

alienation, individualism, indifference,

apathy, elitism, racism, to destroy the

destructive economic and governmental

system and through out of our hearts the

laws, the ideas, the wrong choices, the illusions,

the restrictions and the false

plans of this system

Δυστυχώς...πράγματι, έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε ακόμα πολλά προβλήματα σε αυτό τον κόσμο μέχρι να θεωρήσουμε το πολιτικό και κοινωνικό σύστημα επιτυχημένο ή να αισθανθούμε ότι ζούμε σε "ιδανικές συνθήκες συνύπαρξης"… Τα πάρτυ, οι μαζώξεις, τα φεστιβάλ, οι πλατείες, οι διαδηλώσεις δεν βρίσκονται σε έναν "άλλο κόσμο", αναπνέουν τον ίδιο τοξικό αέρα που διαπνέει όλες τις σχέσεις μας εδώ που ζούμε...Υπάρχει πολύ βία, πολλά ψυχολογικά κόμπλεξ, πολύς ρατσισμός, πολλές κρυμμένες εντάσεις, πολύ μίσος, πολύ ηλίθια χρήση εθιστικών ναρκωτικών, πολύ κοκαΐνη, ηρωίνη και χάπια διάφορα…, πολλοί μάτσο-τσαμπουκαλεμένοι τύποι που όταν συναντιούνται μεταξύ τους παίζουν το κεφάλι τους σε ηλίθιους καβγάδες και παράλογες πράξεις. Υπάρχουν πολλά ψέματα, πολλές φήμες, πολλές μαλακισμένες συμπεριφορές, το ύφος του καθένα, η αποχαύνωση, η αποξένωση, η εγωπάθεια...Υπάρχουν επίσης πολλοί, που περιμένουν να επανεπιβεβαιώσουν την παραίτηση και την αδιαφορία τους, καραδοκούν για να δουν τις συλλογικές προσπάθειες όλων μας να αποτυγχάνουν και να χανόμαστε και εμείς μέσα στην επιβεβλημένη αποβλάκωση και την γενικευμένη απάθεια...Όλα αυτά τρυπώνουν μέσα στα πάρτυ, τα πάρκα, και τις λεωφόρους όπως τρυπώνουν μέσα στις καρδιές μας, στις μέρες και τις νύχτες μας, τρυπώνουν από παντού, από την τηλεόραση, απ' τις αυλές των σχολείων και των πανεπιστημίων, τους χώρους εργασίας, από τις κεντρικές πλατείες και τα περίχωρα, από τις κυριλέ περιοχές και από τις φτωχογειτονιές του κόσμου… Το να επιτεθούμε στην μαζική αποβλάκωση απαιτεί την πολιτισμική δράση πολλών και διαφορετικών πρωτοβουλιών, απαιτεί πολλούς και διαφορετικούς τρόπους, απαιτεί την εντατική πολιτισμική εργασία πολλών ανθρώπων. Δεν θα θυσιάσουμε καμιά πλευρά της Ελευθερίας για χάρη της "τάξης" και της ευπρέπειας, δεν θα γίνουμε πολιτοφυλακή, δεν θα εξαναγκάσουμε κανένα να δεχθεί τις απόψεις μας...Εμείς όμως, με όλους τους φίλους μας, θα προσπαθήσουμε να αντισταθούμε στην αποβλάκωση, την εγωπαθή βία, την μικροαστική δουλικότητα, τον ελιτίστικο σνομπισμό και την αποκτήνωση που παράγει και μας επιβάλει αυτό το πολιτισμικό, οικονομικό και πολιτικό μόρφωμα μέσα στο οποίο αναγκαστήκαμε να ζούμε...Θα προσπαθήσουμε να βρούμε όλους τους πιθανούς τρόπους, για να αλλάζουμε μέσα από την δράση μας και τις Δημόσιες Εφήμερες Αυτόνομες Ατμόσφαιρες, αυτή την συνθήκη... Σε ένα Κόσμο που οδηγείται στην καταστροφή απ’ τους ηγέτες και τους καθοδηγητές του, ο μόνος τρόπος να ξεφύγεις από την αυτό-καταστροφή είναι να αγωνιστείς για την καταστροφή του συστήματος…, και αυτό είναι που προσπαθούμε μέσα από δεκάδες μικρές και μεγαλύτερες δράσεις….

Να καταστρέψουμε την άγνοια, την εκμετάλλευση, την αλλοτρίωση, τον ατομικισμό, την αδιαφορία, τον ρατσισμό, να καταστρέψουμε αυτό το καταστροφικό οικονομικό και κυβερνητικό σύστημα και να αποτινάξουμε μέσα από την καρδιά μας τους νόμους του, τις ιδέες του, τις λανθασμένες επιλογές του, τις αυταπάτες του και τους ψεύτικους περιορισμούς του… Ελπίζουμε μέσα στα χρόνια να ταξιδέψουμε μαζί και να βρούμε συμμάχους, συντρόφους , εραστές και φίλους που να μπορούμε να πολεμάμε μαζί…

The practice of raving entered the dominant discourse as a dangerous, illegal, immoral -and thus transgressive- activity. At the same time, as a youth subcultural formation, the so called “rave movement” maintains a critical distance, and several characteristics of resistance, towards the dominant “adult and sober” world. Even if capitalism usually manages to bend down youthful resistance and incorporate their differences, turning them into commodities, it seems that part of the rave underground culture(s) resists to the dominant practices of the commercialized society. Using information mainly obtained by participatory observation within free electronic dance music events in Athens, the thesis initially elucidates a view on the landscape of subcultures that express and structure themselves within the commonplace practice of raving. Further, this work seeks to trace down the political dimensions of these subcultures, as reflected in the anti-structural discourse that bursts out of the communitas of these urban, post-modern rituals, but most important, as a resistance outlined and performed by the bodies themselves, through their action, their perception of the world, and the notions attached to the bonds between sound, dance and the bodies themselves.

Σύνοψη :

Η πρακτική του raving εντάχθηκε στον κυρίαρχο λόγο ως μια επικίνδυνη, ανήθικη, παράνομη -και άρα παραβατική- δραστηριότητα. Την ίδια στιγμή, ως νεανικός υποπολιτισμικός σχηματισμός με χαρακτηριστικά υποκουλτούρας, το λεγόμενο “rave κίνημα” κρατά μια κριτική απόσταση, και ένα χαρακτήρα αντίστασης απέναντι στον δεσπόζοντα,”ενήλικο και νηφάλιο” κόσμο. Κι αν και ο καπιταλισμός καταφέρνει συχνά να κάμπτει τις νεανικές αντιστάσεις και να ενσωματώνει τις διαφορές, μετατρέποντάς τες σε εμπορεύματα, φαίνεται πως μια πτυχή των rave υποκουλτούρων αντιστέκεται πιο συνεπώς στις κυρίαρχες πρακτικές της εμπορευματικής κοινωνίας. Αντλώντας στοιχεία που ελήφθησαν κυρίως μέσω συμμετοχικής πρατήρησης σε ανοιχτές εκδηλώσεις ηλεκτρονικής χορευτικής μουσικής στην Αθήνα, η παρούσα εργασία αρχικά σκιαγραφεί το τοπίο των υποκουλτούρων που εκδηλώνονται στη βάση της κοινής τυπολογικά πρακτικής του raving. Εν συνεχεία αναζητά τις πολιτικές διαστάσεις των υποκουλτούρων αυτών, όπως αποτυπώνεται στον αντι-δομικό λόγο που ξεπηδά από την κοινωνική μέθεξη των μετανεωτερικών, αστικών τελετουργιών που αποτελούν τα raves, αλλά κυρίως όπως διαγράφεται από τα ίδια τα σώματα, μέσω της δράσης τους, της πρόσληψης του κόσμου και των νοημάτων που επενδύουν τη σχέση ήχου, χορού και σώματος.
